Panelists

Jose Abraham is a lecturer in the Department of Religion and History at Concordia University, Montreal. He earned his Ph.D. in Islamic studies from the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill university, Montreal. He did his graduate and undergraduate work in comprehensive Religion and Christian Theology, respectively.

Kanita Ahmad, currently working at McGill University, has been a member of the Board of Kabir Centre since 2015. She has worked in the development sector in Pakistan and travelled across the country for her work. She has a Masters degree in Anthropology.

Mara Ahmed is a Pakistani-American filmmaker and artist based in Rochester, New York.

Syed Ahsan, is Professor Emeritus at Concordia University and is currently Visiting Professor at South Asian University, New Delhi. He hails from Bangladesh and has published several scholarly papers pertaining to the economy of Bangladesh. During 2005-7, he was the World Bank Resident Economic Advisor at the Central Bank of Bangladesh. He is a past member of the Board of Kabir Centre.

Munirah Amra is of South African Indian origin. She is a former English professor at Collège Marie de France, and artistic director of Theatre 317 and presently a leader at the Thomas More Institute, Montreal.

Sandeep Banerjee is Assistant professor at Mcgill in the Dept of English. His teaching areas are Postcolonial and World literature; Literature and the British Empire; Bengali Literature (Colonial and Postcolonial)

Garry Beitel is a Montreal-based documentary filmmaker. His in-depth explorations of individuals and communities in transition have been broadcast on Canadian television for over 20 years. Produced in both English and French, his probing, intimate portraits have won both national and international awards. He was the 2011 recipient of the Bourse de carrière (for lifetime achievement) awarded annually by the Conseil des arts et des lettres de Québec. He is the first Anglophone filmmaker in Quebec to receive this prestigious award.

Renée Baert is a Faculty member of Department of Fine Arts, Concordia University, who curated performance artist Nikhil Chopra’s 2015 work, ‘La perle noire”-a work performed for 57 hours in September 2015 at Montreal’s Jarry Park and the resultant drawings displayed later at the FOFA Gallery.

Roch Demers, Canadian film producer. He is the founder of the film company Les Productions la Fête and has produced the Tales for All film series for children. In 1991, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and was promoted to Companion in 2007. Demers received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 1998, Canada’s highest honour in the performing arts.

Jennifer Dorner is the Director of Concordia University’s FOFA art gallery.

Dipti Gupta is a member of SAFFMontréal 2016 organizing committee. She is a faculty member of the Department of Cinema and Communications, Dawson College.

Neetha Jimjees Mathew is an IT engineer working for SAP, grew up in Kerala and is a Malayalam movie enthusiast.

Jooneed Khan, is a retired journalist (La Presse, Montreal) and a socio-political commentator with wide interests.

Molly Kohli is the Social media editor / Host / Trainer at CBC/Radio-Canada.

Indu Krishnamurthy is a Project Coordinator at ACEM (the Association of Community Loans of Montreal) whose aim is to promote inclusion for new immigrants, which they do through providing micro-loans to have their foreign credentials certified in Canada or for them to start entrepreneurial ventures. She is also the current President of South Asian Women’s Community Centre in Montreal.

Barry Lazar has worked as a journalist and documentary producer for more than 30 years. He started with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where he worked in both radio and television. He also worked on productions for the National Film Board of Canada, Spectra-Amerimage, CFCF-TV and TVO as well as other broadcasters.

Sheetal Lodhia has been working to foster relationships between academic institutions and the world-at-large, championing inter-disciplinarity, collaboration and broad purchase for knowledge. She has a history of involvement in the non-profit and social innovation sector. Sheetal has a PhD in English Literature from Queen’s University and has taught a variety of classes including one on Shakespeare and film. She has produced articles, art installations, radio documentaries and a video documentary for Bell Media on youth incarceration in Toronto.

Sara Mahboob is currently a doctoral candidate at McGill University’s Faculty of Law. Her research broadly explores legal issues relating to intersection of state law, codified religious law, customary practices, and how this impacts women and children who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Before Sara started her doctoral studies, she practised law for six years at the Lahore High Court.

Tehzib Morad is a professional artist specializing in paintings related to South Asian culture. She is a member of the Board of Kabir Centre.

Shireen Pasha is a member of SAFFMontréal 2016 organizing committee. She is a filmmaker, retired from the National College of Arts Lahore, Pakistan in 2014 as Head of the Film and Television Department.

T.K. Raghunathan, is a member of SAFFMontréal organizing committee. He is also the President of the Kabir Centre.

Sarwat Viqar is a professor at John Abbot who has researched urban form in Karachi. She researches urban politics and everyday spatial practices in South Asian cities with a focus on Karachi. She has a PhD in Urban Studies/Anthropology. She teaches in the Humanities, Philosophy & Religion Department at John Abbott College in Montreal.

Thomas Waugh is a Professor in Film Studies at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University and Research Chair in Documentary Film and in Sexual Representation.

Dushyant Yajnik is Director of SAFFMontréal 2016. He is a Physician-Psychoanalyst, with an interest in “Psychoanalysis and Cinema”.
